The Collection contains the personal documentation of many distinguished

individuals. There are those whose distinction lay in their

significant war experience, like the Victoria Cross holders, Major-

General D. G. Johnson, Major L. G. Hawker, and Lt Commander

Norman Holbrook; or like Howard Marten, singled out in a different

way as the first conscientious objector to face court martial and the

pronouncement of the death sentence in France (commuted after a

fateful pause). Then there are those whose distinction lay in their later

service careers, like Major-General R. C. Money, Vice-Admiral Sir

Charles Hughes Hallett, and Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Saunders. In

the fields of politics there is material on Lord Stockton and Lord

Brockway; in the arts, Henry Moore and Gordon Jacob; in science,

Professor H. Cotton; and in various aspects of civil , aeronautical and

military engineering, Sir Bruce White and Sir Barnes Wallis. In sport,

Arthur Gilligan and Sir Stanley Rous may be taken as examples; in

medical science, Sir Harry Platt, Sir James Fraser and Sir William

Willcox; in entertainment, Dame Anna Neagle and Victor Silvester; in

the church, the Reverend C. A. Martin and the Reverend Dr J. Fraser;

in law, Lord Hodson; in business, Sir Joseph Napier; in education,

Professor T. H. Marshall; in literature, Naomi Mitchison and Dennis

Wheatley; in the academic world, Sir Arnold Toynbee, Carola Oman

(Lady Lenanton), Professor F. W. Paish and Professor J. Lavrin; and in

diplomacy, Lord Strang and Sir Charles Woolley.

The attention of the general public was drawn to the Collection in

1988 through the television series 'Voices of War' which was based on

the Collection and narrated by Peter Liddle. Within the University of

Leeds the Collection acts as a resource for both undergraduate and

postgraduate student dissertations, and it is already drawing scholars

from much further afield. By application to the Keeper, any accredited

scholar, student or interested person may have access to the Collection,

and the Keeper is also available, within limits, to assist research by

correspondence. Subsequent use of the material for publication purposes

is subject to the appropriate copyright restrictions, information on

which is available on request from the Keeper. Voluntary assistance

with the further development of the Collection, which has been a

successful feature for many years, is greatly welcomed. All offers of

such help, together with research enquiries and offers of placement of

1914-18 documentation and souvenirs, should be addressed to:
