shelled us very hard. Sent 25 Xmas cards. Posted letter to L.
24th Nov
Not quite so cold today but very cold dampish at night. Tore up 2 photo
postcards of family by mistake, writing for more tonight. Sergeant Williams
wounded by shell fire today. Sudden burst of rifle fire from Herefords
trenches at 4 p.m.after guns had placed some shells in enemys trench, hear
we go to Lala Baba about end of week. Am not sorry-it's jolly hard nasty
work here- always issuing stores and making indents.
25th Nov
Nasty raw cold day- usual gunnery during the day. Posted letters to L.
etc. Officers of 4/5 Welsh came to look round - we move to L. Baba eve of
27-28 Nov.
6.30 p.m. Our guns bombarded Turks positions or some of them, enemy replied
very feebly- about 1 shell burst in every 4. I could see them coming in
contact with the earth about 150 yards from Oak Tree Gap where I went to
view the bombardment. Shells immediately they leave the Turkish guns can
seen against the sky like a piece of incandescent light flying through the
air, but can only be seen for about a second or so- when they touch the
ground it looks like a great big fire or glare from a furnace especially
those that burst properly. I expected a mine on Hill 60 to be blown up but
it did not come off, for what reason I don't know.
26th Nov
Nice morning but cold. Now being relieved by Lovats Scouts not Welsh Regt.
Had little food.
5 p.m. A most awful storm- worst I ever saw. Lasted about 5 hours and then
drizzled. Trenches all knee deep in water, some parts up to waist. I got
wet through waiting for men at Asmak Dere 7 to 8 p.m. then walked to
Headquarters along Dere , Pit St. , Rich Alley and Oak Tree Gap. Tried to get
to phone. Went to mess, stayed there until 2 a.m. Got over parapet to get
to dugout. Servant had made a drain in dugout. Changed clothes and went to
bed. Dealtry and Foulkes sat in dugout all night. They had been washed out.
