27th Nov

Weather sill unsettled. Left dugout at 4.15 for Perth Station to collect

and load stores, got wet to waist in Rich Alley- climbed parapet halfway

down Rich Alley. Walked about until 8 p.m. Left guard with stores. Started

for Lala Baba with party- fell in trench 8 feet deep- strained my back

took about 12 men to get me out. Nearly got stuck in mud at Brigade H.Q's.

Everywhere seemed like miniature lakes. Weather very cold and drizzling

rain. Waited (at) Well 16 for C.O. for about 1 hour- nearly starved. Met

Brigade Major who took Battalion to sand dunes. No shelter, food or fire.

Laid down behind a bush, it rained hard, then froze and also snowed. At

about 2 a.m. I found Sergeant R, and 4 cooks with a fire and got warmer.

28th Nov

Strong wind. Froze all day and snowed at the same time, felt most

miserable. Fires could not be made for cooking- about 12 men found frozen

to death. My eyes were bad could not see. (Diagnosed as Conjuctivitis).

29th Nov

7 a.m. Sergeant Jones (Bagillt) took me to hospital. Eyes got a lot better.

Gave me wet blankets to sleep in- stayed in cold tent all night. Still

very frosty all the while.

30th Nov

Lay in tent all day- sent to hospital ship 'Galeka' about 8 p.m. Confined

to bed.

1st- 2nd- 3rd and 4th Dec.
