15th Sept.
I start on my 32nd year of service (enlisted 15/9/1884). Hope I shall have
luck to return home so as to get into my 33rd year on 15/9/1916. Some rain
last night . Been a nice day. Enemy's shells quiet this morning but he has
been busy this afternoon. Deepened my dugout and made it nice. Night much
warmer as regards weather,
16th Sept.
Battalion coming down for rest tonight to Hill 10 Camp. Rotten place, is
shelled for hours daily. I went and looked over the place this morning.
10th Middlesex.......lot. Dirty camp.
Battalion got in and settled down about 11 p.m. Pte. Allen of C Company got
hit coming down with rifle bullet. Went with Ellis to 2nd W.F.A. to see
Rev. Toogood. Also saw Father Moth(?), Ellis gave me W & S, went down a
treat.
17th Sept.
Nothing unusual to ordinary routine. Went over to see Battalion, C.O. , quite
well also other officers with them:
'Young' Horner 'A' Coy. Jefferson 'B' Coy
Jenkins 'C' Coy. Dealtry and Alexandra 'D' Coy.
J. Horner- Machine Gun.
Got 2 letters from home and one from Uncle Will.
18th Sept.
Lively artillery duel between 8 and 9.30 a.m. on the left close to our
dugouts. Sent cards to L. (wife) and Uncle Will. also letters to each,
received letter from L. after posting one to her today.
4 men wounded, 4 mules killed and 3 mules wounded belonging to 160th
brigade by 3 shrapnels sent into mule lines.
19th Sept . Sunday
Packed up one 3" shell, 2 pieces of shell, 1 bullet, clip and 5 cases. Sent
by post today cost 2/6d. Nothing unusual occurred - usual shelling
everywhere. Answered L. letter.
20th Sept.
Went to see our new camp (K.O.S.R.) (Kings Own Scottish Rifles?) - rotten
place. Taylor, Sgt. H. Jones and 30 men went with me- got shelled going.
Two of the party got hit (Lt. C. Royce and one man) rather badly. Shelling
commenced at 9.45 and stopped at 12 noon.
