21st Sept.
Moved to new camp at 7.30 p.m. Bad camp. Nothing unusual.
22nd Sept.
Started latrines etc. going as in ordinary camp but with much more
stringent measures. Made good dugout (to) admiration of all.
2 p.m. Enemy shelled camp very heavily. 3 Killed and 5 wounded from our
battalion. Killed to be buried at 6 p.m. Killed include 1208 Johnson,
Cassidy wounded in waist both with me last camp as Postmen, also J.W.
Parry killed of Fat Party.
Coming from Ration Dump 8.30 p.m. (moonlight) noticed cooks dugout etc.
showed very plain- this was made last night by order of the Adjutant and
undoubtedly drew the fire today. Pointed this our to C.O. had dugouts
and latrines covered with bushes to make them appear like natural ground.
Men buried in cemetery at 'A' Beach West. Sorry for them all.
23rd Sept.
No shelling of our camp today but plenty on the outskirts at Mule park etc.
Has a nasty cold, turned in early.
24th Sept.
Feel lot better- cold nearly well- nothing of importance to record,
except that Lloyd (Padre) went to Imbros brought back wine, eggs, figs,
whiskey, brandy etc. Doctor Morgan not well. We shift to another place
tomorrow night. Heavy firing commenced at 7.45 p.m. at Gaba Tepe and Anzac.
Fancy its a demonstration to make Turks use ammunition. Usual shelling but
not at our camp- thank goodness. Two letters from home.
25th Sept.
Busy day clearing out to new camp top of Kapanjir Sirt. Rough camp ground
but fairly safe from shells . Sea 200 + below us cliffs very steep
indeed, got down for the night about 11 p.m. Could not sleep at all.
26th Sept
Quiet day all round. Communion Service in dugout (C.O's) at 8.15 p.m. Slept
very well. One man of 'C'company wounded on beach.
27th Sept.
Feel A.1. Doctor and Jeff(erson) gone to hospital. Paid Padre L 11-16-9 for
grub, wine etc. Found Turcos reaping hook yesterday at Kapanjir Sirt. Sent
long letter to Lizzie. Good news of French and British in France who
captured 23,000 unwounded prisoners and took over 40 guns. Celebrated the
event with C.O. and Taylor. Whiskey was extra good.
