Finding the Fuze.
When the range has been found so that
the mean trajectory passes through the target, the fuze
has next to be found
Drawing of shell explosions at various points
The corrector scale of the fuze indicator, when set at normal
200, is intended to give a burst at the distance from the target
which is most effective at each range. But the burning of
fuzes varies according to the density of the air, the fuze
burning fastest when the barometer is highest; and moreover
the time taken by the shell to reach the target varies
according to the strength of the powder which is increased
by heat. Therefore it is necessary to try several settings
of the corrector scale, and to select the best
So far the B.C has been ranging with right section Nos 1
and 2 guns. He has previously ordered the remaining
guns to set their correctors at graduation
