the detachment. If the shell strikes the shield it will
make a small hole and will burst from two or three
yards beyond the No 1 at the point of the trail will probably
be killed and also the Section Commander, but all
men close behind the shield will not suffer unless
in the path of the shell
At shielded guns the fuze is lengthened by rise of the
corrector scale, till it gives 75 per cent of percussion
bursts and 25 per cent of bursts in the air. It must be
remembered that a shell bursting after passing through
a gun shield will appear to be over.
So far we have only decided or considered the effect on
fixed targets consists of an area of ground thinly covered
with men in successive skirmishing lines or scattered
formations, then the depth of the zone of bullets effect is
of great importance
If we range accurately on any part of a deep target,
the men beyond the distance covered by the bullets will
escape; if we cover a deep area by Searching we shall
expend a great deal of ammunition for a small results
therefore for a deep target we require a deep zone of
shrapnel effect
