Field Artillery Fire

     Three natures of fire are used in the

field namely

     A = Gun Shrapnel Fire

     B = Howitzer Shrapnel Fire

     C = High Explosive Fire


Note

     When the latter shell are not available "Percussion

Shrapnel Fire" is used as a substitute


Gun Shrapnel Fire

     The object of the designer of the gun

and ammunition is to obtain a dense of shower of bullets

flying forward as nearly parallel to the ground as possible

in order to cover a great depth of ground The dangerous

zone of each bullet is increase to the uttermost in order

that if it just misses the head of a man at (a) it

may still hit the foot of a man at (b) 50 yards behind

him, and so on

The advantage of a deep zone, at a fixed target, is

to allow the gunner more latitude, for it will never be

possible to find the range exactly, the trajections of the
