May 1st. Tuesday.
Had aeroplane shoot to start 6am. Action
given and men making their way down on
the guns. German shell came over minus
battery, another plus, and the 3rd in No 4
shell recess, blowing 130 ready fused shells
50 yds away in all directions. None exploded
although one was cut in two. Obtained driving
band of same. No 4 gun being at ordinance.
returning tonight. Nos. 1-2-3 guns badly
damaged, especially No 2, which was turned
completely on its back. On taking
measurement of shell holes caused through
shell fire, found several 12 ft deep. 21 ft across
Stores from No. 4 gun pit found some 150 yds
away. Unknown soldiers grave, which was
found in a very critical condition, when we
first entered this position, was splendidly
kept by our men. Shell blew it to Hell
and the water which filled the hole was
discoloured red.
Battery cook house blown into fragments
Belgian farmer from farmhouse at which
Major lives, was seen to leave at very
great speed taking in a sand bag the
ready cash, leaving behind his two
