My dear Lassie,

Well I had a letter from Mother this morning

telling me that you went to your present address on Monday

evening, + that the "great event" is apparently near at hand

Well, my own lassie, be brave + as cheerful as you can be

under the circumstances. I only wish, with all my heart,

I could be near you! However we must console ourselves

that it may be all for the best. I might have been further,

much further, away. Thank God, for your sake that I'm not.

Mother is going to wire me immediately if the arrival

takes place before I see you. In any case, I don't suppose

I could be actually with you. Now about leave. As I

said in my last, Ripon was out of bounds. It was however

put in again on Monday, + last night I again put

in for a weekend pass. I explained fully that you were

ill + that I wanted it by rail if possible, - otherwise by

road. I have, however, heard a rumour today that
