The French, have alway [sic] been advocates of the far reaching
shrapnel
The Japanese, after the war, have adopted a heavy shrapnel
bullet (36 to lb) and a field gun giving the highest velocity
compatible with moderate weight
The shrapnel fire of the heavy guns is especially effective
not only owing to the large number of bullets in the powerful
shell, but owing to its flat trajectory and high remaining
velocity, which renders the bullets effect at a ¼ of a mile
from the point of burst.
Field howitzers, when used as guns at low angles of
elevation produce good shrapnel effect a medium
range, since each shell contains some 600 heavy bullets
The depth of effect is about half that of a field gun
N.B
The undermentioned is the weights of shrapnel
bullets of different nations; England 41 to lb
Germany 45 " lb
France 38 " lb
Japan 36 " lb
