with Heidelberg! There Mr. Secretary and

on the other hand a simple bussboy.

That's the way of echelle in life. The

years of apprenticeship.

25.3.17   Schoner Friehlingstag

Last night I was forced to go

to Martin again. I did it with

great pleasure. It is a nice walk

at night. Everything is so dark

and quired  quiet  , except the lights on

the front which go up the whole

line from time to time. The

night before I saw some which

went up high in the clouds,

perhaps it was some signal

for an aviateur. By going out

at night now I am always

listening to every noise, and

that's because 2 French officers

which escaped from  Auieyne

Prisoners Camp are still at freedom.

The others (13) are caught.

This morning, 7:45 I started again

for my way. Beautiful day

 Right page

Real inspiring weather. Returned

for dinner.  Snapshoted

run. Went out in the afternoon

to Hilaire. I think it must have

been the most beautiful day

this year. Birds were singing

and one could hear the grass

growing. It is getting green.

The air was so clear and one

could see far away into the

land to the Frenchmen. Swallows

were up. Went on reading

my book about Anna Karenina.

The way Tolstoi talks is so

nice and plain. Light to be

understood.

I feel fine but always hungry.

When I went to Hilaire to-day and

compared those quartiers down

there with ours up here in the

wood, I like ours much better.

Down there they have dusty sticky

rooms and ours are so nice

fresh and clean.
