Chinks are not hard workers. They go
slouching across the fields in groups,
picking up rifles, helmets, bombs, and
other discarded material, which are then laid
in near stacks by the roadside, ready
for lifting by transport. The Bosche
prisoners are filling in trenches and
salvaging scrap iron and timber. They
look rather a picturesque body of men
with their light green breeches and red
bands round their caps, but their unshaven
faces never look very cheerful.
Already a goodly number of fields

are on them with the plough, keen to raise
as big a harvest as possible. They work
