S. Matthias's Parish Church.
Roll of Honour.
WE print below the complete list of sixty-one names of our Roll of Honour. The greatest care has been taken that no name should be omitted. We are, however, conscious that in spite of the greatest care it sometimes happens that even the best-known name may inadvertently drop out. Will our readers carefully scan the list, and also call the attention of their friends to is, as it hangs in the vestibule of the Church? We also want to ensure that all names are correctly spelled, and the rank correctly stated. Mr. Gamble has most kindly offered to erect in memory of his son, who was the first one of our congregation to pay the supreme sacrifice, a brass memorial tablet which will record all the names of all ranks on our Roll of Honour. Our Church has done nobly in the great cause of Righteousness. Sixty-one splendid fellows have proven themselves faithful even unto death. Of this large number, no less than thirty-five were members of our Company of Boys' Brigade. On the floor of our Parochial Hall they learnt their drill, and many a testimony has come that the splendid principles of Christian manliness which they learnt there were fully put to the test when the stern realities of life called for them.
In addition to having all these names engraved on the Memorial Tablet, the Rector is compiling a Book of Records to be kept in the safe in the Vestry. This Book will contain, as far as possible, the photograph of each man, and all such particulars about him as his family would like to have perpetuated. In days - possibly in generations- to come visitors to our Church reading over the names of old friends on the Memorial Tablet will wish to know more about them. The volume of their deeds and the picture of their faces will ever be of touching interest, as well as being an inspiration to others.
Many members of the congregation are expressing their desire to see some further memorial set on foot, to which they will all generously subscribe. The fact that Mr. Gamble is so very kindly erecting the tablet sets the congregation free to engage in some fine scheme which will do honour to the memories of these noble men. A meeting of the congregation will (D.V.) shortly be called to consider the matter.
