In all day cleaning.

America declared War. (?) (sic)

6 February 1917 Tues

In all day cleaning.

7 February 1917 Wed - Full Moon, 3.28 a.m.

In all day.

We are getting some awful grub here lately.

There follows, at the foot of the left hand diary page, printed information about the illustration at the foot of the right hand page.

[SPADE AS BULLET SHIELD. The Canadians carry an entrenching spade somewhat different from our own. It weighs 4lbs, looks very like a spade, only it has a hole in the blade. When fighting the pick portion of the spade is stuck into the ground, the forepart of the rifle being thrust through the hole.

Enough spade is left to enable the rifle to be sighted, and the "armour" is so strong that at 300 yards a modern bullet glances off it.]

 Right hand diary page

8 February 1917 Th - Half Quarter Day

In all day.

Medical Inspection afternoon.

9 February 1917 Fri

In all day.

Took us on a route march this afternoon with the Brd. & nearly killed us all. 1.5 kilos without a stop.

At the foot of the right hand page is a printed illustration of a prone soldier with rifle positioned through the hole in the spade as described in the information printed opposite at the foot of the left hand diary page.
