James Christopher Murtagh was born in Dublin on the 11th. November 1893. His parents were
Mary Anne Murtagh (nee Brennan) Father James Murtagh. He was the eldest of two boys. The
younger, my father, was Francis born 1898. James attended school at The Christian Brothers St.
Mary's Place off Dorset St. Dublin.
In the 1911 census his occupation was noted as boot finisher. James's Mother died in February
1913 and his Father in January 1914.
Mary Anne Murtagh had been previously married to John Conroy 1878 with whom she had 3 Sons
Patrick, Thomas and John.
When James enlisted in The British Army it was to Patrick he wrote, at this time his brother
Francis had been in the 1916 rebellion and had been sent to Stafford Jail in England.
James was mentioned very little by my father maybe it was because his parents had died when he
was only 16 and then James in 1916 and his half brother Patrick in 1919.
