Dear Ken

Thank you very much indeed. Unfortunately the picture has come out strangely. I think you may have the scanner setting wrong - the 'image type' setting may be on 'black and white': you need 24-Bit colour. It should simply be a matter of clicking on the 'image type’ button to see how to change it from one to the other - it should offer you a choice on a list.

Would you mind having another go?

However, I do have a good idea of what JD looked like now!

I have attached the pieces from the diary of Lieutenant Brandt for you. Very powerful material. I think I will be able to build the two stories into a very powerful segment of the book (and we may yet find more), so I say again that I am very grateful to you.

With best wishes

Sept 10th Meaulte Albert.

This morning we had our usual church parade but this time it was very much more solemn, as we knew that

before next Sunday many would have finished their share in this war. After the service there was Holy Communion, which a great many attended, I amongst them; Algy was unable to attend because he happened to be on a Court-Martial. In the afternoon most of the officers went to have a look at an exhibition of the new 3Tanks2 which, we heard, were to go over the Top with us. I was unable to go, because I had to take the Company to

baths in Meaulte; after that I paid out the Company and then went and listened to the Divisional Band, when I heard wild stories of our new Land-monsters. That evening I

heard that the 12th Bn, my old Battalion were quite near us & thought of trying to find them next day. That evening a whole party of us listened to the old Band again: this was

to be our last peaceful evening together, for the next day we moved up.

Sept 11th Albert Carnoy Montauban Arrow -Head Copse

That morning we moved at about 10 a.m. We moved up past innumerable camps and trenches till, after two heavy hours, we reached a place called Carnoy, about three miles
