Nov 9th Nothing moving in Askalon. Our infantry advanced and established themselves in the remains of the town. . We proceeded north along the coast to see if anything could be seen of the enemy but on arriving abeam of Jerusalam the only thing had seen was a couple of stray camels and a few Arabs, so we returned to Askalon. Something marvellous happened at 4pm we actually got a mail this is the first time for close on two months. Enemy's sub reported our way.
Nov 10th Patrolling between Askalon and Jaffa looking for enemy nothing doing. At 4pm we were called into Belak for a spell and anchored for the night.
Nov 11th At 5:27pm a torpedo passed out stern by a few feet and struck Staunch amidships port side by aft funnel. At 5:29pm M15 struck by a torpedo. We lowered and sent all boats and was underway by 5:30pm slipping our cable and went in search of submarine. sweep around until midnight without luck. Staunch broke in halves and sunk in 20 minutes. Casualties M15 was hit in her free magazine and sank immediately survivors from M15 4officers and 26 men rather bad finish after such good results of previous operations. By all appearances torpedoes was one for Staunch and one for us.
Nov 12th Closed Belak just after midnight to search for our anchor and cable but could not find it Left Balek at 3:30am. Picked up our boats with 16 of Staunch's company and proceeded to Port Said arriving 9am discharged survivors to Navy House completed with --- and anchored.
Nov 13th At Port Said. Following received from General Allenby. I and all troops under my command wish to express our sorrow at the loss of your gallant comrades who have died at the moment of victory to which they so ably contributed.
Nov 14th to 20th At Port Said awaiting orders from General Allenby should enemy come down to the coast again. on --- enemy was reported entrenching to northward of Jaffa but he retired inland again.
Nov 20th Rear Admiral Jackson was onboard
