23rd. All quiet last night excepting a few Trench Mortar Shells on A. Company. Lieut R.D. Drynam slightly
wounded in the left elbow. The u/m Sergts. joined from the 3rd Battalion on the 22nd inst No 8782 Sgt.
Chapman G. 4778 Sgt Finch. 11528 Wilcox S. Sergts Wilkin s, Laws and Johnson were sent off to England
in place of the Sergts. who joined One unlucky shell today fell among the pioneers 3 killed and 2 wounded
No 11576 Sergt W. Weston recommended for immediate reward:- On night of 21st August 1916 when the
entrance to a mine near MARY REDAN was blown in, burying several men, Sergt Weston showed
conspicuous gallentry and initiative in digging the men out under fire. By his own efforts and fine example
encouraging others to work, two of the five men who had been buried were recovered alive.
24th. The usual "MINNIE" Strafe last night otherwise fairly quiet A quiet day on our front, but a very heavy
bombardment on our right, about THIEPVAL from 4 to 6.30 p.m.
25th. Nothing unusual.
26th. A quiet night rather wet One unlucky shell dropped in the Head Quarters Kitchen this morning and killed the Colonels 2nd i/c and Adjutants Servants. Lt Wilson to hospital sick.
27th. Again all fairly quiet last night, trenches very slippery owing to rain. 4th Bn Gloucestershire Regt
commenced taking over from us at 9 am. relief complete at 12.10 p.m. The Battn. assembled and had dinners
at Ρ.17Λ. (Sheet 57D) afterwards marching independently to Camp at Ρ.2Λ. Rather cramped for room
average 15 men in a tent Still very wet.

28th. Breakfasts at 6 am. Battn. paraded at 7 am. and marched with the Brigade to BEAUVAL arriving about
11.30 am. All fairly comfortable in billets in the Village.
BEAUVAL.
29th. Battn. paraded at 7.45 am. and joined the Brigade at the Starting point at 8 am. Raining hard Brigade
marched to FLESSELLES via LA VICOGNE and TALMAS. Arrived about 1130 am. Weather cleared up a
little while on the march. Battn took over billets on the Southern side of the town. All billets very crowded.

30th. Companies parade 9-12 and 2.30-3.30 for Platoon and Coy Drill Bayonet fighting Bombing Instruction etc.
Weather still unsettled.
31st. Companies do a drill attack on trenches, judging distance etc. Weather seems to have cleared up, fairly warm
this afternoon.

4th Commanding Officer inspected all Companies in MARCHING ORDER. Sergt Weston awarded

5th. The Battn left here at 7.30 am. and marched to ALLONVILLE arriving about II am. Billets fairly
comfortable.
