Dear Mr Duesbery
Thank you for your letter received in this office on 7 July 1981.
We have written to the Ministry of Defence to confirm that their records
record your relative's name as Private J Duesbery. When we have received
their reply I will write and let you know.
Our 1914-1918 index records him as Dewsbury and I give below his details.
Unfortunately, the grave of Private John Dewsbury 18260 2nd Battalion
Sherwood Foresters who died on 15 September 1916 was among those which
the Army Graves Service was unable to trace after the war and he is,
therefore, commemorated by name on the Thiepval Memorial, France. The
names of the casualties from the Sherwood Foresters who have no known
grave are carved on Pier 10 Face C, Pier 10 Face D, and Pier 11 Face A.
The only personal details we have about Private Dewsbury are that he
was born in Goole, Yorkshire, enlisted in Mansfield, Yorkshire and was
living in Goole, Yorkshire at that time.
Thiepval is a village about 8 kilometres (5 miles) north-east of Albert,
and the Memorial is a little south of the village.
I am enclosing some sketch-maps showing the location of the Thiepval
Memorial together with others of interest for your information and
hope you are successful with your plans to visit the Memorial.
The Notts and Derby Regiment amalgamated with the Worcestershire Regiment
in 1970 to form the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment
(the 29th/45th Foot).
Yours sincerely
Antony Rose
