Oblique and Enfilade Fire

It is clear that a gun shield

or parapet will afford less protection to men behind it

when fired at "Obliquely" and none at all when taken

in flank. Therefore artillery should never miss a chance

of using Enfilade fire

Drawing of a horizontal 45°  line labeled "A" and a perpendicular vertical line labeled "B"

Thus of two targets "A" and "B", fire on "B" at 6000 yards is

likely to be more effective than fire on "A" at 3000 yards

The extent to which this nature of fire can be used on the

battlefield depends upon the ground and on the perfection

of the communications even in open ground affording a distant

laterial views, it would be liable to create confusion

if each battery fired at the target opposite to another battery

But when all are in communication with the O.R.A.

he can allot the target to the best advantages
