depends on the target surface offered by each man, it is
immaterial whether the men are shoulder to shoulder or in
a thin skirmishing line
For practical purposes we may take the target surface
of a man standing as ½ square yard, kneeling 1/3 square
yard, and lying ¼ square yard, measured at right angles
to the trajectory.
If there are 300 bullets in a 16 PR. Shrapnel, and the angle
of the cone be 1 in 4, then for firing at men standing the
cross section of the cone should be 150 square yards,
at men kneeling 100 square yards, and at men lying
45 square yards, which fixes the proper distance of the
point of burst from the target at 52 yards 44 and 40 yards
respectively
So that we see that the bess target each man exposes
the closer up should the shrapnel burst, irrespective
of whether the men are one yard apart or ten
N.B
In practice it is quite impossible to observe the distance
from the target at which the shrapnel bursts, we can
only observe the height
