Rained heavy. Went out in car
July 26
At Battery all day
Left 9-pm to finish putting up
Steel Tree. constantly under heavy
shell fire. Very warm. in fact Red
Hot. Engineers Cpl. kneeling by me
struck by a great splinter in the
arm. Just missed my face by
inches. Arrived at Battery 5am
27 after working all night. Had
to work at intervals strafe to heavy.
July 27
Battery all day. 2 pm Bosche planes
dropped Bombs which shook earth
like an earthquake. Left position
9pm to complete Steel Tree
Men and myself Wet through
with pesperation, returned 4-30
am 28 inst
