 The 26th of September 1916 was a memorable day in the history

of the Battle of the Somme  ..SOMME.  It was on that day that French

and British soldiers marched side by side through Combles. It

was on that day that the stubborn fortress of Thiepval , which

had hitherto resisted all our efforts to capture it, fell to two

Divisions of the New Army. This ways of trenches , studded thick

with cunningly concealed machine gun emplacements and  ... 

proved too great an obstacle on the 1st of July. But now

the deaths of those gallant officers and men, who had fallen

on that day, were amply avenged.

[ On the 26th of September our  .the British.. barrage was admirably timed,

and our    .the British.. soldiers followed so closely behind its' protecting curtain

that  .in most cases. they were over the German parapets and into the German

dug-outs before the enemy could recover from his surprise and

man his trenches with the machine guns which had served

him so well before.

But in some places the German  machine gunners, with a courage

look of desperation stuck to their ports in spite of the storm of

shell fire which beat down upon them and caused heavy

losses amongst our  .the.. advancing troops. [ This was the hard

experience of a company of the 12th Middlesex. They had

approached to within  forty yards of the German trenches,  .and.. as
they lay there waiting for the barrage to lift, they suffered

grievously from the pitiless hail of bullets which swept their

ranks. They had but little cover there, and, with each

minute that passed the toll of casualties mounted higher

and higher. When the barrage lifted every offices  in the

company had been killed or wounded. So it was that

when the  ...  time came to charge all their leaders had
