However, in the hunting around, we

got a good look at the town, which

has been a lovely place at one

time.  At present, it is in a state

of havoc and chaos - many of its

finest buildings battered and burned

in the recent fighting. The town was

in German hands for over three years.

We found our Company eventually,

and after seeing the commanding officer,

went off to dinner, for which we

were ready.  We are billetted in

empty houses and are quite comfortable.

There are very few people (civilians)

in the town, and hardly a shop has

re-opened yet.  The company has a

holiday on Sundays, so I shall

be starting work tomorrow morning.

There will be many interesting sights

here.  You will be pleased to know

that I am only a few miles

free day. I mean to make an effort

to reach it.

I have received no letters for a

week now, but expect they will soon

get through to here from the Base.

It is a funny New Year time for

me this year, but I am quite well

and contented and none the worse of all

the knocking about. I will soon

get settled down to the new conditions here.

    Well mother, this letter should

put your mind easy as to my

whereabouts. I hope you are still

keeping well and cheery. Please write

soon and tell me about your

New Year.

With love to all at home,

I remain,

Your loving and affectionate Son

Willie.

Cheerio - Goodnight!
