Miss J. W. Grant,
Charlemont Place,
Dublin.
Dear Madam,
Your brother met his death doing his duty in the face of the enemy. I can think of nothing better to say of any man in the world.
I know the loss is severe to you, but remember that it finds you with hundreds of thousands of others who have also given greatly.
To give up one's life in trying to save the life of others is the grandest of all deaths - Greater love hath no man.
Believe me I sympathize deeply with you. I can assure you that he had no pain as he and four others of my men were killed instantly with one shell. The man they were carrying was not touched. Two others of his companions were so badly wounded they died on the way back to the dressing station. The one shell costing me seven splendid men killed.
Yours very truly,
G. D. Farmer. Lt. Col.
