X  He was always brusque. If you went within a metre of the

gate he  ordered you away. Truely he one explained that he

would be punished if he did not do so. But on the other

hand many of the others did not object  at all. I think

if the venture had been mine I should have selected another

sentry.

A. All sentries have the strictest orders to fire at

escaping prisoners.
