  the summer before our evening meal. Every escape made the

  next one harder to carry out . For the time we were stymied .

  Later on in Oct 1916. The Germans used to have a roll call

  or rather go round our rooms between 10 - 11 at night.

  This was in consequence of another escape. They Germans 

  also made the senior officer of each nation produce a

  piece of paper with the numbers that ought to be present .

  The French refused  to do this & the Colonel & his adjutant

  were sent to another camp. The Russians now had a

  General. His adjutant went on the principle of always

  having his numbers wrong. They were the  largest body
  

  here and there was always a delay whilst an argument

  went on & the adjutant, we called him KAPUT, he

  was quite mad   three words written above "quite mad". They are "or pretended to be"  , scratched his head.

  There was however method  in his madness. In June

  I think the  two words written above "the". They are "it was" commandant out got  a word written above the word "got" is "received"  a message that a Russian

  who had been captured who said he came from Clausthal;.

  The commandant replied that now  two words written above "now". They are "no Russian"  were missing. He

  had  three words written above the word "had". This stout fellow  been absent the best part of a week & was not

  missed - Later on morning appel our names were read

  out & we severally answered  to our names - Still it

  was not hard to fox the Germans. The English & the

  Germans  the word "Belgians" is written above the word "Germans"  were the good boys of the party.

  However our goodness  did not last long.

  The Russian General here who came in '16 was to my mind

  a lunatic. He was an enormous man, one of the biggest

  I have ever come across . He hated  the Germans. I was

  quite normal till the moon was full. He  spoke excellent

  French, English and German. He could a Germans as
