HYMN
GOD of our fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far-flung battle line,
Beneath Whose awful Hand we hole
Dominion over palm and pine.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget--lest we forget!
The tumult and the shouting dies,
The captains and the kings depart,
Still stands Thine ancient Sacrifice
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget--lest we forget!
Far-called out navies melt away--
On dune and headland sinks the fire;
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget--lest we forget!
Amen.
Then shall be said :
GREATER love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his
friends.
I am the Resurrection and the Life, saith the Lord: He that believeth in
Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth
in Me shall never die.
THE LESSON: Wisdom iii., 1-10
BUT the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no
torment touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their
departure is taken for misery, and their going from us to be utter destruction:
but they are in peace. For though they be punished in the sight of men, yet
is their hope full of immortality. And having been a little chastised, they shall
be greatly rewarded : for God proved them and found them worthy of Himself.
As gold in the furnace hath He tried them, and received them as a burnt offering.
And in the time of their visitation they shall shine, and run to and fro like sparks
among the stubble. They shall judge the nations, and have dominion over the
people, and their Lord shall reign for ever. They that put their trust in Him
shall understand the truth: and such as be faithful in love shall abide in Him:
for grace and mercy are to His Saints, and he shall care for His elect.
