judgment of the world realizes that
under existing conditions the
mailed fist is at times still needed.
Those of us in the present generation
in the United States
who have grown up since the
Civil War have given no
thought to war as a possibility
nor to training our youth
to be soldiers. It now comes to
us as an overpowering shock
that we may have to change our
conception of life and devote
energy to defending ourselves
by force of arms. That this
should be so is the great incubus
of this present war which
hangs upon us. But we must
accept facts as they are, not
as we wish they were. What
I am concerned about is
that we teach our boys courage,
