29th Casualty Clearing Station
B.E.F.
March 21st, 1916.
Dear Mrs. Bayle,
I regret very much to tell you that your son Joseph
passed away quite peacefully in the Clearing Station to-day. He
was conscious almost to the last, and joined with me in saying the
last prayers very earnestly - while he told me to give you his
dearest love and say that he thought of you continually. He received
the tenderest care from both the Doctors and Nurses here, and
everything that could be done for him - was done.
He will be buried in a beautiful cemetery here, in
consecrated ground, and his funeral will be attended by the Officers
and men of this Unit, and there will be full Military honours.
His grave will be marked by two crosses, one at the head
and the other at the foot, both bearing the name, his regiment and the
date of his death.
Please accept my deepest sympathy with you in your great
loss - but if anything can help you at such a time it will be the
thought that having been found faithful unto death, he has received
the crown of life. He died a true soldier of his country and of God.
Yours sincerely.
Wm. C. Stanesby.
Chaplin.
