Description

Reverend Roderick Morris Kedward was a Wesleyan Methodist Minister who lived at 14 Alexandra Road, Hull in 1911 census.

The Rev Roderick Morris Kedward died on Friday last at Great Central Hall, Bermondsey, where he had ministered every Sunday for 20 years, aged 55 years.  He was a leading fighter in the Kent "tithe war" and President of the National Tithe-payers Association.  He was Liberal MP for Ashford from 1929 to 1931.

THE REV. R.M. KEDWARD
The Rev. Roderick Morris Kedward, superintendent of the South London Mission, who was a leading figure in the Kent Tithe War", died yesterday at the Great Central Hall, Bermondsey, at the age of 55.

He was president of the National Tithepayers' Association and led the procession which a year ago paraded and eventually burned effigies of Queen Anne and Sir George Middleton, chairman of the Tithe Committee.

During the controversy several distress orders were levied on this farm near Ashford, Kent.
The son of Mr. William Kedward, of Ashford, he was trained for the ministry at Richmond College, and founded King's Hall, the Wesleyan Mission at Hull.

He was a member of the Bermondsey Borough Council and Board of Guardians, and served in the War in Egypt and France.  He succeeded Dr. Scott Lidgett as superintendent of the South London Mission in 1918.  He contested Central Hull in December, 1918, and West Bermondsey in November, 1922.  In 1923-24 he was Liberal member for West Bermondsey, and from 1929 to 1931 for the Ashford Division of Kent.

He contested Ashford again in 1933.  He leaves a widow, three sons, and three daughters.
The Rev. Walter Spencer, who succeeds as superintendent of the mission, said yesterday:
"Mr Kedward worked himself to death.  He ministered here every Sunday for 20 years, and it is meet that he should die in this hall among the people who loved him and whom he loved.  Two thousand Bermondsey mothers met him here every week, and hundreds of homes have been influenced by him."

MEMORIAL TO TITHEPAYERS' LEADER
Nearly 1,000 tithe payers from all parts of the country on Wednesday witnessed the unveiling of a memorial to the Rev. Roderick Morris Kedward, at Beechbrook Farm, Hothfield, Ashford, Kent.  Mr Kedward was president of the National Tithepayers' Assocaiton and Liberal member of Parliament for Ashford from 1929 to 1931.  The memorial, of Cornish stone, was unveiled by his widow, Mrs. Daisy Kedward.  The Chairman of the association Mr. A G. Mobbs, paid tribute to Mr. Kedward's work for the tithepayers and said that the obligations under the 1925 Act had been reduced by £20,000,000.  Mrs. D.E. Rash of the National Association, said the Mr Kedward "would not have stood for the 1936 Act".

She urged that resistance should be continued and if the present Government would not do anything they must try to get one which would.
