EASTER IN FRANCE
It is today that we claim as ours!
Religion? Yes, a goodly part of the day will fill
And by a solemn recognition find
Perhaps some great and deeper meaning in the name.
But other hours will come when other thoughts
Must steal away e'en such as these, -
And they will be of all the little things
Which other Easters brought to you and me
And we had laughed and idly failed to see.
A letter was not much in other years
That told of flowers by a garden wall
Or of the neighbor's dog that raced and circled wide,
Destroying every tender, growing plant
In some wild revelry of Spring:
Or of the shadows lengthening on the lawn
At just this time on other Easter afternoons
When you had waved and called for Her to ride
In the purring, four-wheeled heaven at your side:
So here in France we wait, -
And in the recollections of the past
We smile in contemplation of the Easters still to come
Amd the scenes of home and all they mean.
