The Mathematics of a Boarding House
(with Apologies to Stephen Leacock)
1. Any landlady is an irregular polygon: that is a
figure of many corners + much "side," and all
landladies are equal to all other landladies.
2. Any landlady can be reduced to terms by a
series of propositions.
3. A single room is one without magnitude
and without dimensions.
4. Any two Boarding House meals are not
equal to two square meals.
5. If two boarders occupy similar rooms
and the wrangle between the one boarder
and the landlady is equal to the wrangle
between the landlady and the other
boarder, then their bills will be equal -
otherwise one will be greater than the
other; then the latter will be less than it
might have been, which is absurd.
