Life on a "Destroyer" at Sea

White from the salt spray forward

Black from the smoke stack aft:

Driven by fire, and water,

My God! What a hellish craft.

                      _______

Everything's lashed, and battened,

Everyone's hanging on.

Every vessel she passes,

Thanks God, when she has gone

                      _______

Down in her stifling stokeholds,

Living and awful dream,

Stoking, shovelling madly,

Keeping a head of steam.

                      _______

See those demons of stokers,

Working in a perfect hell.

Wondering what has happened

God knows, and he won't tell.

                      _______

Hark to the bugles calling,

See how the searchlights plauy

Searching the wide horizon

Turning the night, into day.

                      _______

Look! Oh the starboard bow, Sir,

Where? Ah! Port, steady, so.

Then in an anxious whisper

Tell them to let her go.

                      _______

Fire! And a splash in the wake,

As the Whitehead trovels away,

As the fixing opens wildly

Chasing the far away

Down:

Carsh: and it all is over,

The warship is sinking fast,

Taking all hands aboard her,

Down to their rest at last.

                      _______

Then, with her boilers bursting,

Red, with her victims' gore.

The destroyer passes onward,

Into the great "No More"

                      _______

So now, kind friends ere you go to sleep

Say a prayer, for our sailors are ready, these perils to face.

To fight, for their country, their homes and their race.
