Dear mother

I received your welcome letter this morning

I got the registered parcel of cigarettes alright but I never

got the letter with the order in it. The letter I got this

morning is the only letter I got since last Monday

week with the exception of the parcel of cigarettes.

I began to think there was something wrong when

I was not getting a letter from you. I asked the

Regimental Postman if there was a letter for me

on Sunday or Monday last and he said there

was not. Perhaps it went astray in coming over

here. But I can tell you if it came here I would have

got it. So you may rest easy it never came here.

I dont know if there was any mail boats sunk

that it might have been on. Because we never hear

of them. There's no use making enquiries about

it because the post office will tell you once it was

not registered they wont be responsible. Theres no

one here would keep a letter belong to anyone else. Because

we go to the office and get our letters. Thats our own

regiment office. So we wait until our names are called

out then we get in and get our letters and parcels. It

right side

left me in an awful hobble. I had to borrow money

from another chap. Everyday I was expecting it. Dear

Mother we are working like slaves now from early

morning till 8 9 and 10 at night. But I am quiet

used to hard work now. You see we get our tea at

10 at night so I always have something to eat before

going to bed thats if I have the money. Write as

soon as you get this and if you can will you

send on another order. We will only have to

be at the loss of the last order.

No more at present.

Write very soon

From your loving son

Jim
