Bertha McFarlane in tennis kit.
Bertha was tennis champion, and played at
Wimbledon. This pocture was published in national
newspaper, it was considered shocking, because she was
exposing her ankles, and the story goes that she was sent
to her room with bread and water as punishment!

deaconess because she was told at
a very early age that she would die
young. She lived to be 86.
