Airon St Vaast

Took the empties down to Railhd but did not load.Expect we are going back to Hesdin. 

16 January 1917 Tues - Last Quarter, 11.42 a.m.

Im all day cleaning.

Pay at 6 o'clock.

Received letter Ethel R.

Cleaning Morning.

Snowing hard. Coal job afternoon.

Cliff having gone to Merch I had it all to myself & a nice time I had too. Loaded at Etaples & got back at 9. o'clock.

'Some' drive that.

 At the foot of the left hand page is the weekly printed information on the illustration at foot of right hand page:[TEMPORARY BRIDGES. Our Engineer Corps is up to all sorts of dodges which are not laid down in the manual. In war time it is often impossible to build the bridge that should be built, both on account of time ad because the enemy would fire on them while at work. Our sketch shows a temporary raft made from tarpulin sheets  stuffed with hay. The hay floats are extremely bouyant for about 10 to 12 hours.]
