Tales of the V.C     ...The following appears for be from a stamp 1295-8 MAR 1918

                                           C.S.M., H. DANIELS 2nd Rifle Brigade

                                            CpL      C. NOBLE       "   "

...The name appears to be written in either faint ink or pencil and is crossed out then rewritten in smaller writing to the right.     J.P, Lloyd   BY  Lieut. J.P Lloyd

On the 12th of March 1915, the third day of the battle of NEUVE

CHAPELLE two soldiers of the Grenadier Guards were each

awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery in the assault

by the 7th Division on the  German positions in front of the

PIETRE Mill.  On the same day, farther South C.S.M.,

Daniel and Cpl Noble, both of the 2nd Rifle Brigade, won

the same high honour near the BOIS DU BIEZ.

About five o'clock in the afternoon, the 2nd Rifle Brigade

left their trenches to continue the attack.   ...symbol of word inserted later Several pathways had

already been cut -through their own wire, but there were too

few of them. Hardly had the first wave breasted the parapet,

when the enemy opened a murderous fire with rifle and

machine gun. The men raced for the gaps in the wire,

and crowded into these. As they pushed their way through

the storm caught them. In a few moments the narrow

lanes were choked with the dead and dying.

Then, when it seemed as if the attack must fail, C. S. M.,

Daniels and Cpl Noble volunteered to go out-into that

hell of flying bullets and complete the cutting of the wire.

Armed with wire-cutters they crawled out, and began their

task.

These gallant men had not lain out there long, before both

were wounded. Badly hit as they were (Daniels' leg was

broken, and Noble shortly afterwards died of his wounds) they

would not yield as long as they had the strength to continue.

Strand after strand fell to the ground before their nimble

fingers, until at last they had cleared a broad avenue
