on to the parapet, they and tossed their load of bombs into the

face. The survivors scrambled out of the trench, treading

each other underfoot in their eagerness to escape from

pain of death, and ran back across No Man's Land towards

their old trenches.


But "the man who routed a battalion" was fated never not to

return to his Company again a second time. As he stood there on the

parapet, throwing bombs after the fleeing Germans, he was

struck by a bullet, and died, gloriously, in the very moment

of his victory.
