all the road in front of him lashed with bullets but he never flinched. Keeping close to ... one of the high banks he lay flat on his face and dragged himself foot by foot, down the road.
Twice, where the road was stopped by entanglements of barbed wire,
he had to cross it to crawl through a gap on the further side. He was
very near to death many times, but he came to his goal unbattered
at the last ...
It was a wonderful thing that he reached the front line at all.
It was a miracle that he came back. But the did so, and by the
same way an hour later, and he brought back with him news that
was worth much to his side.
Acting on that knowledge , his Colonel that evening launched a
counter-attack , [insert] and [/insert]
whichdrove the Germans back to their own trenchesonce more!
