EXTRACT from letter from Mrs. Amy Cheer,
Grimsby, on receiving the photographs
of Flesquieres

"Dear Frank,
.... The three cards I shall
treasure highly. The poor tank, high
and such a total wreck, speaks eloquently
of the terrible ordeal the brave crew endured.
I could easily see you in the
rather disconsolate trio that are representing
(for the moment) the glorious British
Army. And the card with the long,
dull-looking country roadway, the
ruined buildings on the far side - silent
evidence of the terrible times now, Thank
God, past. No wonder you poor stranded
boys turned your back on the ruins!
Now I come to the best and most
arresting photograph. Those trees look
like ghostly giants on guard, with the
Crucifix between. Can the mind for
a moment gauge the heartaches, the tears,
