was immediately started up and we
were all drinking each others health
in - lemonade. Of course, the topic
of discussion was not so much
what the terms of the armistice
would turn out to be - rather it was when the R.N.V.R. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve would
get demobilized and we should return to Blighty with our little
alligator etc. souvenirs in the good old Jack Tar fashion.
The armistice conditions were
a source of great satisfaction and
the most exacting & obdurate of us
couldn't have had the cheek
to ask for better.
The news was responsible
for quite a lot of excitement in
the town itself. Flags were in
evidence everywhere - on houses,
vans, motorcars, bikes and even young
men (both white and black) were
carrying quite large union jacks and
stars and stripes about with them. Every-
body was jolly and not a few were
tipsy. In the afternoon the joy bells rang for quite a long time,

and motorcars were buzzing about
all over the show blowing their horns
and hooters as if their owners were mad. At the
theatres patriotic songs were all
the go and I might say that the colour-
ed people know more patriotic
songs than the people at home
(but I shan't say they can sing them!)
Another effect of the armistice
I might just mention here. All the
cable traffic for the colony is being
done by us here just now, and soon
after the good news arrived a
certain wealthy business man in
the town was sending out frantic
cables to his agents in U.S.A., Canada,
Britain etc. cancelling all orders on
hand - apparently expecting a slump
in prices.
Last time I wrote you, I think,
was from Bermuda. After about
6 weeks sojourn there, during which
I not only learned how to swim
but actually did half a mile at a
stretch, I left with 8 others to come
down here. On the way we called
