The Soldier

The bitter war is raging the soldier's heart is stirred

To the call of duty when the bugle note is heard

He has left a home, & perhaps a wife

For the battlefield, amid the din & strife

Perhaps a dear sweetheart that he bade good bye

Or a loving mother left at home to sigh

Or the sorry parting a fond lips would press

Will they meet again tongue can never guess

This is not the time to think, or even pause

England must advance for honour and a cause

There will be a sacrifice of many thousand men

When the roll is called, the sorrow will be then

In stirrup or the trench they will fight the foe

Victory or death, onward they must go

Weather it is charge with bayonet or the gun

They will face the foe, danger they not shun

There is British pluck as in the days of yore

When our gallant heroes faced the cannons roar

England will be proud when the day is won

And will honour men for deeds that they have done

Such tales will be unfolded then

How they fought like Englishmen

With men like these we'll never lack

None can take out Union Jack

           God save the King
