Cherie,
This is really written in the 16 th but I have not
had time to scribble you a line. For one thing I have
written the father of Cpl Hall who was killed in the charge.
This N.C.O. was court martialled in Stalfield for failing
to comply with an order and he took it very much to heart
being reduced from the rank of Sergeant. His people
wanted to know whether he has been made Sergeant
again which he much hoped to be. I have tried to
console them by saying he would have been a Sergeant
now if he had lived.
I have alas had a letter from Garner-Smith's
father who is in America has only had cabled news.
He wanted all particulars and I have written him a
long letter.
This is how it comes about that you have
had to go without me today.
I can quite understand the Major being
furious at Marks' promotion. So am I. If I
had staid at home I should probably have got the
rank insted of Marks. It is perfectly scandalous.
However he will probably have to take it off when
the war is over as it is only temporary.
Many thanks too for the news of the
Memorial Service. I know Wheater looked older.
I think we all do - except Cars who is unchanged.
As a matter of fact I have written Wheater but
