  I've promised to put something

  Into this little book

  And something for to write about

  I've tried all day to look

  I've looked at Segt. Dickenson

  With the bandage round his head

  Until he made me dream of him

  I dream't that he was dead

  And then there's one named  ... 

  Who from Somerset does hale

  Since he's had his operation

  He has looked a trifle pale

  We have one man from the Hampshires

  Who to Dardenelles was sent

  But now he keeps us comp'ny

  For his fingers slightly bent

  And then there's me from Oldham

  Ah won't they all be glad

  When they say the last of me

  Co'd I have the nightmare bad

  There's Humpage who sleeps next to me

  Who used to sing and dance

  And my word, he's gone through something
