Ernest joined Royal Engineers. he was a cabinet maker by trade in Banbury. He was very interested in politics. He became a founder member of the Labour Party after the war. Ernest was very badly hurt during the war and he had shell shock. He came back during the depression. He had five children and he was left alone to bring them up when his wife Blanche died aged 39 of TB. He was always interesting and told lots of stories. He was very proud of his family and he was very affectionate. he talked a lot about the war.

Says he's comfortable - misses old regiment Photo of Ernest - on a postcard with tents (aged about 16) Keepsake - written by Blanche Sarah Hawtin detailing her wedding to Ernest when he came home from the war on June 21, 1918. 'In the firing line' postcard - Ernie writes (beautifully!) to his fiancee Blanche. Says how much he misses her. He' written their names on the photo.
