                                                                               22.

  There was a comandant so fat that the never unless obliged

  came upstairs, and a lieutenant- a mannerless creature.

  There was a collection of dog kennels near the guard

  room but no dogs-

  There was an amusing incident on the occasion of the visit

  of the General officer commanding the district. I had a most

  excellent view from the windows of my room. General appears

  sentry very frightened calls "aus" - nothing happens- General furious

  goes out- comes back -again a male voice aus- again the

  result is nil- General barks a mile away- the guard

  now does condescend to aus- and is barked at. I dont

  think anything pleased the old man after that.

  I imagine one of the Russians in our room was a professional

  story teller. At any rate when we were in bed  & the lights

  out he used to commence & for an hour and a half con-

  ference on one tone talking, as no one else said a word.

   I presume the idea was to send the rest asleep. On me it

  had the effect of wanting to throw boots. We pointed out

  that we wanted to sleep when we went to do bed, may be

  this was only our insalar taste but it was our habit; on

  learning this the nuisance ceased.

  At this camp we were not permitted razors except the safety

  varriety or knives &  were ordered forth with to give them up.

  This I had to expend a portion of my hard  earned pay in

  providing myself with a safety razor having  already provided

  myself with an ordinary razor in Germany.

  The razor that was confiscate was about a year later returned

  to me.
