A sepia studio photograph of Private John Connell wearing a mixture of WW1 uniform, the emblem on his hat is for the Machine Gun Corps, his trousers with the inside flashes are unusual, maybe they came from a guards or mounted regiment.
He is missing the usual uniform belt and webbing made of canvas or leather, so perhaps this was early in his service when uniforms tended to be inconsistent due to supply problems.
