The Infantryman

The Gunner rides on horseback, he lives in luxury.

The Sapper has his dugout, as cushy as can be

The flying mans a sportsman his homes a long way back

In painted tent or straw spread barn or cosy little Shack;

Gunner Sapper & Flying man (Each to his job, says I)

Have tickled the Hum, with mine or gun or or bombed him from high.

But the quiet word, the dirty work, since ere the War began

& the work that never shows at all, that of the Infantryman

                                ----------------------------------

The Guns can pound the villages ... the trenches in

And the hum is fair for home, when the J.M.B. begin

And the Vickers gun is a useful one, to sweep a parapet,

But the real work is that done with Bomb & Bayonet.

Load him down from heal to Vrown, with tools ... Kit

He's always there, where the fighting is! - He's there unless this hit

Over the mud the blasted earth he goes where living can

Hes in at the death, while he has yet breath!

The British Infantryman.
